# What Happens After Lia Introduces You: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

By Renata Kobayashi · Published 2026-10-29

Published by [Refer, the company behind Lia, the AI career agent](https://www.liarefer.com).

After Lia introduces you, you and the hiring manager are connected by email and take it from there, usually by scheduling a first conversation. Before that moment, both of you have already said yes: Lia only makes an introduction when you and the company both agree.

This walkthrough explains every step, from signing up to your first conversation and beyond, so you know exactly what each email means and what to do next.

---

## **TL;DR**

- You sign up, tell Lia what you want, and she **searches around the clock**.
- When she finds a fit, you get a **“New match” email** explaining why, with **For me / Discard** buttons.
- A company can also ask to meet you; you get an **intro request** with **Yes / No** buttons.
- When both sides say yes, Lia sends an **introduction email** with you and the hiring manager in copy.
- From there, **reply quickly**, propose times, and treat the first call like a conversation, not an interview.

---

## **Step 1: What Happens When You Sign Up?**

You create your profile in a few minutes:

- **Your goals:** the kind of role, industry and company size you want next.
- **Your filters:** location, work model, whether you want to be an individual contributor or a manager, and your minimum salary. Your minimum salary is used only for matching and is never shared with employers.
- **Your resume and LinkedIn**, so Lia understands your experience.
- **Your availability:** “Ready to interview” if you’re actively looking, or “Open to opportunities” if you’re only curious.

Refer identifies the companies you work for or have worked for and hides your profile from them.

---

## **Step 2: How Does Lia Find Your Matches?**

Lia checks open roles at companies that work with Refer against your profile, on both sides:

- **Does the role fit you?** Location, seniority, salary, work model and what you want next.
- **Do you fit the role?** The requirements in the job description compared with your actual experience.

She only recommends a role when every check passes. Every open role on Refer has a named person at the company who has agreed to receive introductions, so when there’s a match, someone is on the other side.

## **Step 3: What Do Lia’s Emails Mean?**

| Email | What it means | What to do |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **New match** | Lia found a role that fits | Click **For me** if you’re interested, or **Discard** and tell her why |
| **Intro request** | A company or hiring manager wants to meet you | Click **Yes** to connect, or **No** to pass |
| **Introduction** | Both sides said yes; you and the hiring manager are now in the same email | Reply and propose times to talk |

---

## **Step 4: What Happens After You Click Yes?**

It depends on who said yes first:

- **If you said yes first** (“For me”), Lia asks the company. If they also say yes, she makes the introduction.
- **If the company asked first**, your yes completes the double opt-in, and Lia makes the introduction.

The introduction is a short email to both of you, explaining who each person is and why you should talk.

> “Hi Maya and Daniel, you’ve both said you’d like to talk, so I’m connecting you. Daniel leads backend engineering at Acme and is hiring for a senior platform role. Maya is a backend engineer with five years in payments infrastructure. I’ll let you take it from here. Transparently, Lia”

_Example for illustration; names are fictional._

---

## **Step 5: How Should You Reply to the Introduction?**

Reply the same day if you can. A good first reply is short and makes scheduling easy:

> “Thanks, Lia! Daniel, great to meet you. I’d love to learn more about the platform team. I’m free Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon (ET), or happy to work around your calendar. Here’s my LinkedIn for context: [link].”

---

## **Step 6: What Happens in the First Conversation?**

The first call is usually informal: the hiring manager wants to understand your experience and tell you about the role. Prepare three things:

1. **A two-sentence summary** of what you do and what you want next.
2. **One story** about a project closest to what the team needs.
3. **Two questions** about the team’s biggest challenge right now.

After the call, the company’s normal hiring process takes over.

---

## **Step 7: What Happens If You’re Hired?**

Congratulations! Let Refer know you were hired through Lia’s introduction. You pay a one-time fee of 20% of your first month’s base salary, after your first month on the job. It doesn’t apply to bonuses or equity.

Why charge candidates instead of companies? Because it makes the incentive 100% aligned with getting you hired. When a job-search product is free for you, the companies paying for it are the client. At Refer, you’re the client.

## **Focused FAQ**

**What happens after I click YES on a Refer email?**

If the company has also said yes, Lia sends an introduction email with you and the hiring manager in copy. If not, she asks the company, and introduces you once they agree.

**How does Lia introduce candidates to hiring managers?**

By email, with both of you in copy, only after you and the company have both said yes.

**Can a company contact me without my approval?**

A company can send an intro request, but Lia only connects you if you say yes.

**Do I have to accept every match?**

No. Click Discard and tell Lia why; she’ll use that to improve your next matches.

**When do I pay?**

Only if you’re hired through one of Lia’s introductions, after your first month on the job.
